Subject: Trumpetfish
Where: Kralendijk, Bonaire
When: February 2026
Description: Trumpetfish are found all over the globe in tropical waters and reefs. Their bone structure does not allow them to flex many parts of their body and their trumpet shaped mouth can expand to swallow and digest prey.
Interesting Fact: They hunt by floating slowly towards their prey (mostly small fish) and snapping out their jaws with a kind of suction force that forces prey into their mouths.
Observations: Trumpetfish will align themselves vertically with seaweed and coral for camouflage. Their long bodies imitate the shape of the seaweed to hide from predators and ambush prey. I saw this happening many times while diving near reefs in Bonaire.
