Subject: Bald Eagle
Where: St Peters, Nova Scotia, Canada
When: 7/23/2026
Description: Bald Eagles are mainly brown with a white head and tail and were named bald when the word meant "having white on the face or head" instead of hairless. These predatory birds live in massive nests in treetops near the water. Their nests are the largest of any bird in North America, some of the biggest recorded going up to 13 feet deep and 8 feet wide. Their diet consists of around 80-90% fish and can include some small mammals and waterfowl.
Interesting Fact: The bird call commonly known as the bald eagle's is actually the call of a redtail hawk, people often replace it to make the eagle sound more imposing and intimidating.
Observations: We've often heard these birds screeching at our anchorages in Bras d'Or Lake, sometimes we spot them with prey in their beaks. They don't enter the water like many other fish feeding birds, only swooping down low enough to catch surface level fish with their talons.
