Subject: Brown Pelican
Where: Fort Amsterdam, Sint Maarten
When: April 12 2025
Description: A large carnivorous sea bird with a mostly white head and brown body. It is the national bird of Saint Martin and Sint Maarten. The pelican family is at least 30 million years old.
Interesting Fact: The pelican hunts by diving down into the water and scooping up a large mouthful of it, hopefully with fish. It's gular pouch helps with this way of feeding by allowing it to have much more mouth space than other birds.
Personal Note: Seen in Sint Maarten with babies at Fort Amsterdam
