Subject: Atlantic Puffin
Where: Bird Islands, Nova Scotia, Canada
When: 8/8/2026
Description: Puffins are sea birds with diets that consist almost exclusively of small fish. It is mostly black with a white chest/head and orange beak/feet. They nest on cliff tops in large groups for safety from predators and so taking off is easier.
Interesting Fact: Atlantic Puffins can carry as many as 60 small fish in their beaks at a time, due to the inward facing spikes inside their beaks that hold the fish in.
Observations: We saw lots of large groups of them floating on the water near the bird islands but whenever we would get too close they would all either dive underwater or fly away.
