The Dingle

 Subject: Sir Sandford Fleming Park

Where: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

When: 7/13/2026

Description: A park along the south side of the NW arm in Halifax. It is dedicated to Sir Sandford Fleming, who is best known for spreading the idea of standard time across the world so that trains could run more easily with standardized time zones. Sandford grew up in Scotland but moved to Canada at age eighteen. In his time there he engineered hundreds of kilometers of the Canadian Pacific Railway, was a founding member of the Royal Society of Canada, and founded the Canadian Institute in Toronto. The Dingle Tower, a tower near the edge of the park, was constructed to commemorate the 150th anniversary of representative government in Nova Scotia.

Interesting Fact: The official name of the park is Sir Sandford Fleming Park but is commonly known as Dingle Park or just The Dingle, thought to be after the town of Dingle in southwestern Ireland, but the true reason is unknown.

Observations: We only went on a short walk through the park to see the tower, but it was a nice breakaway from the city. We also walked along a coastal trail near the park that had a good view of the boats in the anchorage
