Caribbean Reef Squid

Subject: Caribbean Reef Squid

Where: Kralendijk, Bonaire

Description: With ten tentacles and a torpedo like body, this squid uses jet propulsion to move itself through the water. They stay in small schools near shallow reefs, sometimes seen jumping out of the water.

Interesting Fact: They can eat up to 60% percent of their body weight in fish and invertebrates per day.

Observations: The one we found was dead on our boat, it must have jumped out of the water, landed on our boat and gotten stuck, suffocating soon after. Once we found it we put it in a container full of sea water to see what it would do and some of its color changing cells started to turn to red and orange.
